Has anyone set up an employee with 17 withholding allowances? It looks like 14 is the max that can be entered. I advised the client to set them up with 14 and I can't imagine any taxes will be withheld unless they make an awful lot. Just curious if anyone else has encountered this. And does the thought of 17 dependents make anyone else queasy?

Not sure but be careful - refer them to their accountant (unless that's you). In a few cases I've had customers on payroll who make an incorrect setting then call at year end when taxes are due (usually based around taxability of pension plan type deductions). I now make it a point to say that I'm not in the business of providing tax or accounting advice and they should contact their professional advisor.

Thanks Wayne. Their accountant was copied on the message and I replied to both of them, so I think I'm covered. Great point though - we always mention this too, especially when it comes to payroll!

IRS says no limit and no reporting requirement, unless they issue a ""lock-in letter"". Max of 14 can be increased in Tax Table Maintenance | Filing Status.

Well thanks Bob! I never even thought to look in the tax table, just assumed it was something hard coded.

Maybe not queasy, but it would give me an urge to drink.
