Has anyone automatically populated the item's extended description field for all items at the time the item is defined, regardless of the field size exceeding 30 characters?

If you import from VI, and the data is longer than 30 characters, it goes into the extended description automatically. I know this because one of my new clients just complained about this yesterday.

Yep, @AaronClark 's right. I do it all the time.

I think Cindy is asking how to populate extended even when field size is not over 30?

Combine the description with some spaces?

Trailing spaces probably get trimmed out. I'd use a bunch of spaces, and then some other character like ""~
