Hard inventory Allocation

  • 1.  Hard inventory Allocation

Talking to a group that REALLY feels they need to be able to hard allocate stock to a sales order.  They would like a column added to the inventory maintenance screen that says quantity allocated next to quantity on sales order.  I feel this can't be the first group to ask for it but I can't seem to find a good answer on how to handle it.  I could have one of our master developers write something but feels like something someone may have already solved so thought I would ask :)

    Thanks!

This can be done without modification, using lot/serial valuation.

But that then changes inventory valuation method which has costing affects and extra data entry on the receipt of goods side.  Maybe I'm just not thinking it thru, it's 5pm on a Friday and it's been a long week.....

I've tried to do something similar in the past, using scripts to enforce the allocation calculations, but it is just too complicated.  The possibility of two users allocating the same inventory at the same time, in new orders (just in memory) is not preventable.  Push the allocated values back into IM_ItemWarehouse UDF and you have to deal with allocation changes (where the UDF value may include the before-edit value from the SO you are changing...).

Adding UDF's to the screen for users to manually manage the allocations with no controls... sure.  But to actually block over allocations... after my past experiences I won't even try to build something for that.

Pushing everything into the same lot#'s everywhere might be possible to script (helping with the extra data entry stuff) but they'd have to accept the valuation change to allow using the Sage feature.

Perhaps someone else has solved the issue, but I haven't seen it done.

You might look at multi-bin. There you can create a customer specific bin and allocate inventory to it. It will then reserve the inventory for that customer. Not sure of the free version has this function.

I was thinking it might be something with multi-bin, I'll go down that road Monday.  I second what Kevin said, I thought thru that and it just seemed like a nightmare to try and script all that.....

Adding Multi-Bin Basic would accomplish this for them.  The "allocation" would be in the newly added MB Tab, not on the main or Qty Tab.

Thanks, we are moving forward with a master developer enhancement to do this on the main screens after some review as we did want it on the main / qty tab!

What is the problem are they looking to solve?

Wouldn't Quantity Allocated be almost the same as Quantity in Shipping?  ( I understand that this requires an extra step. I've also worked with enough clients in my career to know that the ones who say "we always do it this way and never have any exception to the way we order" ..... will have exceptions )

I had a client who made metal screws. They had huge orders that took a few days to pick. They staged these orders in a corner of their warehouse in what were shopping carts that some employees must have borrowed from the store next door. The problem was that these staged orders never showed up on inventory as in shipping because they waited to record them until the entire order was ready. ScanForce has enhancements including a pick to pallet that might help in this type of situation ( https://scanforce.com/sage-100/pick-to-pallet ).

Wayne, much to your point, they are "allocating" the stock days before they go thru the picking motion on the orders they want to pick.  It is sort of a they have always done it this way, but also I get why they would want to see their more immediate stock needs vs all sales orders that are in their system as they do have people place orders months in advanced.  I talked going down the scanning/multibin way but that, at this moment, is a lot more money than they want to spend unfortunately.  They need more pain :)

Wow.  Custom programming is the "low cost" option?!?

    Isn't multi-bin basic free (...subscription...)?

To really get to what they want, and what they currently have yes.  To Madeline's point they don't want to have to drill down into things and they don't want to manage bins.  All they want is allocated qty tracked when they enter it on the sales order detail to show in Item Maintenance / Inquiry.  We figured about 30 hours of custom work, one time charge, and they seemed to be happy.
