Grrr. Stinking Corporate IT Department and their attempts to block social media have taken away my access to Social Cast! I have tried to respond to some of the questions that have been popping up, but because of corporate firewall restrictions, I may be less responsive until the IT staff in Fargo figure out that social media can actually be useful. Or, perhaps I'll just start working from home.

How about using remote desktop to your home computer and accessing it through that? Or you could try this: https://www.vtunnel.com/

    Good suggestions @MarkChinsky. Thanks!

@EricAnderson: Do you have any of these issues, or is it just because I choose to come into the office?

For the last two months I've opened the VPN once per week (on the weekends), to enter time. And I don't think I've been in the office since Nov. So no, I haven't had any issues. But I'm a little hesitant to pick up my new laptop and start using the VPN more regularly. I'm assuming if I'm home, but have the VPN open, I'm going to have these same restrictions. But then I can always jump on my home desktop.....

Vtunnel was.... blocked. I ended up creating an SSH tunnel to my linux server at home, and using that as a proxy. We'll see how long that lasts.

So, the firm is paying for you to be in 90Minds but they won't let you get any value from it:? Makes perfect sense!

Welcome to the world of CPA firms. The most dysfunctional places on the planet - at least during the time that I worked at two of them in the late 1980's

My experience as well, Wayne. I don't know how in the hell I managed to stay at a CPA firm for 7 years! That certainly planted the hatred of time sheets seed.

It's likely not personal. I support our special firewall at my kids school which keeps kids off dangerous places on the internet. However, they almost always have an admin panel that makes exceptions on sites. Nobody could think that Socialcast for 90minds is comparable to Facebook, but the automatic category tag of social media blocks it. Your IT folks should be able to set an exception. Funny thing is the Archdioces started recommending sites for education that hosted their embedded videos on youtube and thus weren't accessible because of the mandated firewall against youtube.

Mark, I totally get the reason for having these types of filters at schools. However, when you start treating adult professional knowledge workers like children, it's demeaning to the PKWs and demonstrates that the partners in the firm have absolutely zero trust in their employees. So, why hire them in the first place if you don't trust them? And they really think young professionals will want to join a firm with this environment? Dinosaurs!

Ummm, I thought @AaronClark was under the employment umbrella of a CPA firm. Billable hours, keep your head down and don't give a HINT that you are actually having fun while you are productive..........................

I'm off to pillage... Thanks everyone for letting me rant a bit. Next week we'll discuss the evils of the #TimeSheet program with a copyright date of 2005.

I don't think @AaronClark is sick enough in the head to spend all of his time working on CRM.

@PeterWolf - so your recruiting pitch is ""You don't HAVE to be crazy to work here, but it helps""?

    Posted 01-09-2013 14:12
Why is Aaron spending all of his time sick in the head? If he is throwing up that much, shouldn't he go home?? What kind of employer treats its under the weather employees this way in the pursuit of billable time?????? Oh, yeh, that's right- a CPA firm!!!!!!!!
