I've got a client where the general ledger period end processing hangs up.  It stops at "updating history files - one moment please".

After much experimenting I determined that the general ledger years to retain history has reached its setting of 10 years.  By increasing the retention years to 11 it will then go through period end processing.   If you then try to go on to close the next year, you get the same effect.  Increment to 12 and away it goes.

The purge G/L history seems to be affected as well so it would appear it has something to do with removing detail records from the history files.

For now incrementing the retention years get us by, but I don't really see that as the final answer.

I've tried rebuilding keys files and sort files with no success.

Anyone else seen this and have a solution?  Version 2018.8.

Before purging, it has to create a bunch of detail records with the balance of the BS accounts at that point, so that a recalc still calculates the correct total as of today.
SO perhaps it's that step, not the purge, that is taking a while.

It could be.   I've let it run for hours with no results.

Well five years later it appears that we have hit the same snag.  I believe originally I moved the maximum number of years of history from 10 to 15.  Now we hit 15 and are encountering the same problem.   Bumped it to 25 and everything is good again.

Copy to a test company, bump the retention years down and just let it run its course.
