Free upgrade to Premium from Advanced Speed Differences

  • 1.  Free upgrade to Premium from Advanced Speed Differences

    Posted 01-15-2024 11:08

    Hello,

I have a customer that has been quoted a Free Upgrade to the Premium version from Advanced but want to think through all the pit falls and don't want it to be slower in the end.  I also don't want the price of their maintenance to triple two years from now.   Assuming the free upgrade includes the free SQL Server version from Sage.   I will double check, but in case anyone knows if they have been through this before for extra reassurance.

    The SPM says:

"In the Sage 100 Premium client/server environment, some integrated applications do their processing at the workstation, not at the server. As a result, users may experience performance issues when running integrated applications from remote locations. Some of the applications affected include Crystal Reports."

Do you all think this mean any remote users?  Or just remote users running Sage over a VPN and not from a Remote Desktop?

Does anyone know if the speed of True Commerce Foundry or StarShip Desktop version will have any speed improvements with the Premium version?

    TIA

    Christine Kuhn

    Hi Christine

I can't comment on the speed issues but I can tell you - without of course predicting the future from Sage - their maintenance should not increase simply because they go to Premium.

    Thank you,

    A few quick thoughts:

    • SQL is not free.  (SQL Express is not supported, and all other versions have a cost).
    • IMHO, the primary benefits of SQL are data security and speed of custom reports.
    • Otherwise, Premium performance is similar to Advanced for most circumstances (as long as there is a high-speed / low latency connection between the Sage service and SQL).

This led me to believe that you could use SQL Express, but perhaps SQL Express is not the same thing as SQL Run Time Version.

I missed the 'if you purchased SQL Server'.. the first time I read this...

    Microsoft SQL Server Runtime Edition

If you purchased SQL Server directly from Sage, you will install Microsoft SQL Server Runtime Edition. The only difference between this version and the standard edition of SQL Server is that Microsoft SQL Server Runtime Edition can be used only with Sage products. The performance of the two versions is the same, both come with the same database administration tools, and neither have restrictions on the database size.

"...perhaps SQL Express is not the same thing as SQL Run Time Version..."

Correct, SQL Express is different.  And the version of SQL sold by Sage is very limited (cannot be used by anything else, cannot be used in a data center with shared servers...).

I have a Premium FAQ, which I created to share with my more technical customers. The issue I kept running into was that customers would want more info, and they'd call Sage, and then they'd come back more confused than before they called.

@Wayne Schulz - Gem of a document.  I wish I had been aware of it before doing my first ADV migration to SQL.  Needless to say, there was a learning curve.  My biggest gotcha was dealing with the migration of Sage Intelligence reports.  Not easy to do with the database change.  If your ADV user has SI, factor this hidden cost into the "FREE" upgrade costs.  Also, the Doclink for the FREE software change was very spendy.  At the end of the day, the IT department has a more secure database and the users have faster reporting capabilities.

It's helpful when IT says, "Can you just send me the requirements?".

It may not be every single piece of information that IT will need but it's a lot more than what my customers tell me they've been able to obtain from calling Sage directly (which larger customers with formal IT departments love to do).

They do have SI, but just a couple simple reports.  Do they need to buy an extra connector or just a pain to redo connecting them?

Jeff can add his experience with SI, which is likely more recent than mine. I'm a novice with SI, and all I can recall doing was exporting and importing the reports, and then they worked. I don't think I had to do any significant re-writing, though the customer I worked with had almost all GL-based reporting.

No need to purchase connectors.  I have been told by my SI expert that the official stance from Sage is that SI in Premium is not supported.  I have not verified that with any Sage article.  He has developed a way to migrate them but it is time-consuming.  A handful of reports isn't too bad, but it does add up.
