FedEx Package Tracking Launched the DHL Site

  • 1.  FedEx Package Tracking Launched the DHL Site

Invoice History Inquiry, Shipping button, Tracking:  The user enters a valid FedEx tracking number and the DHL tracking site launches, and of course, no shipping information is displayed.  If the FedEx number is manually entered on the FedEx tracking site it works fine.  It seems that Sage is interpreting the FedEx account as a DHL account.  I can re-create this on my test system.  Any ideas?

I know as part of the fix when the original website they used was killed off, they hard-coded which website to go to based on the format of the tracking number.  Something may have changed in the FedEx format?

yes.  I think it may have something to do with the format.  Researching this it looks like there can be multiple format types.  I found a test FedEx tracking number that seems to work from Sage 100.

This end user ships using FedEx Priority, FedEx Economy, and FedEx Ground.  FedEx Ground tracking numbers work fine.  FedEx Priority and FedEx Economy tracking numbers do not work.  I wonder if Sage didn't program all of the possible tracking number formats.  FedEx Priority tracking numbers begin with 9. FedEx Economy tracking numbers begin with 6, and FedEx Ground tracking numbers begin with 2.

Email from Kellen Neal, Sage 100 Customer Support Analyst:

I was able to check with some colleagues on this case and it looks like they're already reporting the tracking issue to our IT and currently the best workaround is just to check the numbers on the main fedex website for the moment.  There may be an issue in the tracking website that would recognize and route those numbers to the right place.  This is a bit of a new process since replacing iShip in February of last year, so it's possible they hadn't incorporated some of the styles of numbers yet.  The current ticket will remain closed for the time being but as we get any additional information on this, we will update the case and alert you as well.

    LOL.

    No, really. LOL....

How are they going to monitor and update this if they closed the case?

I now return you to our new industry program called 'Hide and Seek: The Ticket Edition'.

Yes, I thought the same... curious how they are going to know to let me know when the bug has been fixed if the case is closed.  Maybe there is another system that they log pending bug fixes.

I just received a reply to my email asking about this:

    Hi Doug.

There's a separate internal case we have for the tracking site since it's outside of the Sage 100 software that the problem appears to be happening.  You may get a call or email about this soon as we have escalated the issue to one of our tech colleagues as well.

Has this issue shown up in the Sage KB? I think they're blowing smoke...

The support rep, Kellen Neal email indicates it is under KB ID 221924660118567 however that KB doesn't cover the issues this end user is having.  I received a call late yesterday from Scott Brady and he is writing up this issue as a defect and is supposed to send me a defect ID.

They don't expect it to be fixed until the end of this year at the earliest.  Apparently it is complicated.  Here is how it is supposed to work:

Sage has 5 carriers in their program:  UPS, On Track, Fed Ex, DLH and USPS.  Some carriers use the same format, so the programmers can't look at a tracking number and know what carrier it is for.  I believe UPS might be an exception to this.  If the program doesn't know the carrier the it is suppose to display a Google search engine so you can find the carrier site yourself.

However, the program should not display the DHL site if the tracking number is for FedEx.  That's a defect that they are looking into.

I received the following email today from Scott Brady:

    Hi Doug,<u5:p></u5:p>

<u5:p> </u5:p>I'm following up on Case#8010080313 for regarding Sage 100 redirects tracking package to wrong carrier.<u5:p></u5:p>

I wrote and published Solution ID: 240511012040197 - Sage 100 redirects tracking package to wrong carrier<u5:p></u5:p>

I also wrote Defect#117091: Sage 100 redirects tracking package to wrong carrier and submitted to Engineering.<u5:p></u5:p>

Possible cause: If the tracking number format is valid for multiple carriers, Sage 100 is redirecting to the carrier with the first possibility (alphabetically).<u5:p></u5:p>

Workaround: Open carrier's site to track package<u5:p></u5:p>

Case#8010080313 status will be left to Fix-Pending.<u5:p></u5:p>

Well, at least we can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Sage 100 users don't rely heavily on their software for shipping needs. Who needs to track freight carrier numbers anyway? It's not like shipping inventory is a major part of their business or anything.

There are a lot of holes in this freight tracking.  UPS seems to work good.  Any other carrier is a crap shoot.  My testing shows that if the carrier isn't UPS the user gets re-directed to a web search so they can look up the carriers tracking web site and copy and paste the tracking number.  Oh yes, world class SaaS alright.
