Some of our members are uncomfortable "networking." These feelings are common (although not as widespread or intense as fear of public speaking!).

This little book, The Intentional Networker, could be helpful to anybody in improving the effectiveness of their networking. It is more than just showing up and talking (or just listening ...). It is a skill that must be developed to produce the business results you want.

I've known the author, Patti Denucci, for decades. A remarkable writer-turned "connector."

Networking improves after a couple of drinks.... It may not be effective networking but it's networking!

Thanks @Jerry Norman for the recommendation.  I placed my order last night; and hope to move it up on my reading list before mid March.  :)

I think you'll find in the book that networking is different from socializing.

    • First, the goal of networking is determining how each could help out the other. So, asking questions about your partner's work, their needs, etc. with an eye to how you could enhance that is central.
    • Second, you are often networking through your partner. That is, who they know who could help you with your challenges. I often find this happens when my partner is explaining their challenges and comes across something interesting and I ask questions about it.
    • Notice the first two items are about your partner. "Givers Gain" is the motto of a nationwide networking group underlining that your helpfulness in this is key to surfacing referrals.
    • Third, it all revolves around trust. We won't trust approaching another with an opportunity for them unless we trust that they won't embarrass us with the referral or project. This is where the socializing comes in.

I hope this helps others to do as Madeline did. I think widespread practice of these skills in 90 Minds could greatly improve this already awesome group!
