EDI

I've had a customer recently purchase EDI from True Commerce to integrate sales orders from just one trading partner. Now that they're ready for implementation, they are upset to find out that the trading partner is going to charge them fees. I don't know what kind or how much yet, but here's my question. Generally speaking, do trading partners charge on-going fees? I've heard of testing fees, but nothing else.

I have several customers using TC and I used to work a lot with MapaDoc many moons ago.  I have never seen a trading partner charge a recurring fee.  True Commerce charges your customer by the kilo character.  Typically the trading partner is pleased the customer is EDI compliant as it lowers its cost of processing documents.

@Doug Higgs - The company is called Smart Equip. The thing that concerns me is that the quote from True Commerce was $8k, which the customer agreed to. Now they say that the additional "fees" from Smart Equip will double the price of the project. Double? No details on that yet.

That just seems all kind of wrong to me.  I am with the client.  A testing fee but double??  Yeah many words come to mind but they are not nice

That is all kinds of wrong.  Typically, True Commerce includes testing as part of the setup for the trading partner.  It is (or was) about $500.00 per trading partner and included the basic PO (850), Invoice (810), acknowledgement (997), and compliance label.

Hmm, I would question if they did not understand the "transaction fee's" that will be charged by TruCommerce; or if the trading partner truly has an additional fee they need to pay.  Usually, the Trading Partner will provide a "EDI Trading Guide" for conformance and mapping purposes.  I wonder if the trading guide references fees to be paid to the partner, that your customer missed?  A trading partner charging fees for non compliance, yes, but not for compliance.  This is a new one for me.

That's one of the great things about TC EDI - they eliminate all the charges of going through this network or that network, because you can funnel anything through TC and it talks back to all the networks.
I bet that partner just doesn't get that it will be seamless for them (apart from the testing they may have to do.)

Crisis averted! Apparently the person at Smart Equip simply wasn't understanding that TrueCommerce already works with them, despite that information having been provided to him. ಠ_ಠ  I didn't do anything. It was the implementation specialist at TrueCommerce, Mark Chulak, who got to the bottom of the issue. This was a good experience with TrueCommerce insofar as their support.

I thank you all for your feedback!

If this doesn't beat all! Smart Equip says that they have to convert their data to "EDI format", so they WILL charge my customer a one-time fee of $5,000 plus an on-going $1.00 per transaction fee. My customer is asking why he needs both, and now wants to cancel his purchase with TrueCommerce because he can import with V/I. It's as if Smart Equip doesn't want to do EDI so they're making it painful. My sales rep will try to investigate further, but if Smart Equip doesn't play ball, we'll have a fight on our hands because TC doesn't do returns.

Is the business they receive from this one customer sufficient to keep them as a customer?  I mean, honest to goodness!

Really?  Who initiated the whole EDI process?  Smart Equip?  If so, what they are actually doing is making EDI a revenue stream.  This was and is an on-going issue in EDI where the buyers try to figure out how to make more money off of the vendor.  Most do it through charge backs or penalties for imaginary infractions, which is why I tell my EDI clients to fight every charge back or fee.  In this case, they are charging an up front fee to set up basically an export and import, and then an ongoing revenue stream for each transaction, which will probably each order, but may well be each line of the order.  And I'm betting there will be other "surprise" fees...

Your client needs to justify this expense if they are going to keep doing business with Smart Equip.  I suggest that they have a discussion with the management of Smart Equip as to why they are trying to gouge your client.

And your client should start looking for other customers they can leverage the TC EDI link and maybe "divorce" Smart Equip.  Smart Equip's actions sound shady as heck.
