Yes people are still using eBusiness and web Services. We created a site with some info about EBM and it can be found here
https://www.4ebm.com/. You may also find users using SData. It is true that these technologies are not being actively developed. There are limitations. The API that he would be referring to would be Web Services which is VERY limited.
Since these technologies are not actively developed, we created our own integration for developers that gives us more control over the development of the tool. SDE can use JSON or XML to integrate from other systems. Here is a demo so you can see how it works
http://www.sagedataexchange.com/demo/default.asp. More info about it a can be found here
https://wiki.mbabsi.com/doku.php/enhancements/sage100/modules/cs100e-sde. What is nice about SDE is it opens up Sage 100 to get whatever you need. Some resources have already been setup and we can create code to handle any special requirements so that the developer integrating wouldn't need to know anything about Sage, we would handle any of that and let them do what they do best.

Explain to the customer that writing ERP software and making web pages that are attractive to both humans and bots have ZERO intersection of skill sets, and have him talk to ROI and/or CertiPro about doing the integration.
