Does anyone have clients using alternate directories? We have a client moving to 2018 Advanced. His reasoning: ""I would prefer to have the data on a separate virtual disk, that way it is easier to separate the data from the OS which can potentially go bad and require a reinstall. That way we can just restore the OS partition from the backup and connect our current datadisk."" They also have non-SQL network version of FAS. I haven't worked with alternate directories in many years. In the old days, you used to have to restore the data back to the same drive as the program when you upgraded. What is current info on use of ADs?

i usually install Sage onto a different disk than C:. That would accomplish what they want without using those alternate locations.

I've come in and found an install where data lived elsewhere and it was all controlled by this path, but there are so many times when the MAS_XXX files are not enough to restore functionality without MAS_System, MAS_Users, etc. and I don't recall whether those were in the alternate location or not, but it had been running well enough before we came along (and moved it back into the MAS90 folder). The installation guide (yes, I looked at it!) says this: If company data is moved to a different data location using Library Master Company Maintenance, the same drive letter must be used from all workstations to point to the alternate folders, including the server if it is used as a workstation.

What your describing isn't alternative Directory but what directory the application is installed. The alternative directory is to have the data in a different path than where the application is installed. Typically I see with with Payroll data where the path may be to a folder or drive that only payroll staff has access to. With Standard, this could be a local USB drive that you plug in only when doing Payroll. I think it was 5.x that they extended it to be system data as well as payroll data that can have alternate directories. So C: could be the OS, D: can be the application, and E: Could be your data (relative to the server, if Advanced). If he is reinstalling the OS, there are common files that would be needed for Advanced/Premium that Standard would not require. The exception is if the data is on another server and it is that server OS that he is wanting to recreate the OS. None of this would be a reason to move to Advanced since Standard can do it too. It would just be relative to the clients and not the server.
