Does anyone have a work around for Employee last names that are longer than the 15 character limitation in Sage 100 2013? Any third party enhancements? Sage could not give any recommendations for solutions. Also, I would appreciate any insight on government regulations for tax forms and names.

Regular rats nest here. Abra??? Sorry, just had to say it... How bad is your dilemma. Maybe DSD? Maybe a UDF, but you just have all those form changes....

Is the total name (first and last) more than 30 characters? Could you enter part of the name in the first name field?

I thought about the udf and adding part of the last name to the first name field, but I am hesitant to how it will reflect on all the Tax forms...we don't want to be non-compliant. I believe we do need to look at a third party since there are people using hyphented names. Thanks.

There must be some IRS guideline for it. Obviously(?) it isn't mandated or else Sage would actually have had to address it...

I am thinking the same thing, but trying to search for the IRS guideline for this subject, so I can send it to the client assuring them that it is compliant to only enter the first 15 characters of a last name.

I just recently added a UDF for this same issue and was able to add it to check printing, but now I'm worried about the tax forms. I'm surprised Sage has never extended that last name field - ok, so not really surprised but slightly more disappointed than usual

IRS and SSA say you can abbreviate first and middle names but the entire last name must be printed on the W-2. You can do a web search for ""last name too long for w-2"" to read up on it. UDF can work or you have to do your W-2 printing outside of MAS.

Might be worth a call to Aatrix tech support to see what they recommend. 701-746-6814 .

As a person with a 4 letter first and last name, it's been difficult for me to understand this. People have actually changed their names because of this. I also think the limit on ADP is also 15 , unless they changed.

Ok the IRS has to have some limit. We all have heard the story about the woman in Hawaii with the last name of Keihanaikukauakahihulihe'ekahaunaele I'd love to see that W-2

@JohnHoyt - Never thought it quite like that before but you ARE a four letter word!!!! And so is Sage!!!!!

So is Jeff you realize @JeffSchwenk ?

Ouch....... Another 4 letter word... Start calling me Jeffrey!

You would think short, simple names would be easy. No - ""is that Jon?"" or ""White?"" are common. Of course, @JeffSchwenk probably gets ""Is that Geoff?"" Probably not anywhere near the problems @MoiraGoggin has.

What could you possibly mean @JohnHoyt? I think I've heard them all, yet at times I'm still surprised. What about you @ThereseLogeais? I'm sure you've heard interesting variations on your name.

We can't all be as fortunate with our names as @RobertWood

Is it Therese or Theresa?"" ""It's Therese."" ""Okay, thanks Theresa."" Legious, Logayus, Lehjy, you name it. I should add Logeeus.

Actually, @RobertWood has called me to task (and I am sure others) who refer to him as Robert WoodS... Actually, my attitude is call me anything but call me late to lunch.....

that was an attempt at humor Therese, I have a brother in law, Erik, and the some like to throw in the ck, Erick, to convert all bases, and then Anderson, on or en.

  • 27.  RE: Does anyone have a work around for Employee last n

    Posted 01-25-2014 16:36
I got it @EricAnderson - very funny! I always have a hard time with Eric/Erik. I know some with both spellings and cannot keep them straight. I think I know them, ""Hmm, I think he's a c and he's a k..."" but I do not want to mess them up so I typically verify with a previous email or, ahem, my CRM..... And being from MN, I don't think I know of any Andersens.... Anderson, Carlson, Larson, Johnson. Did I miss any? Of course, there are Ericksons!!!

And yes, @JeffSchwenk anyone near a body of water in MN at this moment is most likely ice-fishing. Sigh..... Look out San Diego, here I come!

Sorry @CatherineFrias - some time after 6:00 PM yesterday I sent this discussion in a whole new direction talking about my 4 letter word names. Seems like there are some good suggestions on the payroll question we can work with.

One last name story (for me): Many times after I tell people my name, they ask ""Jon Voight?"" My answer is always ""Yes, I gave up being an Academy Award winning actor to be an ERP consultant.

My first name is Sperry - so I sign everthing as S. Scott Hickman. I get tons of telemarketing calls asking for S.

Sounds like another option is to just do the applicable W-2's manually/separately outside of Sage 100.

Can the last name be overridden in Aatrix if you are using a udf to store the correct spelling for checks, etc.
