Many of their challenges were not related to Power BI specifically, but to the lack of a proper and well developed data warehouse framework. Like most of our clients, the DataSelf out-of-the-box data warehouse and Tableau templates zoomed Acumatica's internal BI at least a year forward, and for a fraction of the DIY cost.

We also ran many internal performance tests of their Power BI solution versus DataSelf with Tableau. Our approach was refreshing their data 20+ times faster (not 20%, but 20 times faster!). We didn't have time to test our approach using Power BI as the UI instead of Tableau.

Getting over with the data-geek talk, we're honored and excited that DataSelf is providing Acumatica's team with more timely and easy access to their key performance indicators, so they have more time to focus on better serving their clients and partners.

Thanks for the interesting insight. It's nice to hear where project success factors reside and where dragons lie in wait for future projects.

Your comments regarding thinking through the data model and warehousing approach is telling. I have seen several customers abandon internal BI projects. They usually provide a laundry list of reasons behind project failures but I always felt that the true, underlying reason was poor detail needs definition and limited data modeling. So many teams go straight to the technology and presentation layers. That's like picking out wallpaper and paint colors before ensuring the architectural designs are accepted, site work is complete, and a solid foundation is laid.
