Good question -
If it helps engage members than I think it's a good idea to keep members participating and to promote new member participation. If it's used/abused for self-promotion than I think it is more harmful than helpful. Lately, I think its more the latter than the former.
We have a feature we haven't activated yet, ribbons and badges. This may be a better use of gamification for our group. We can issue badges for example for:
Presenter - anyone that has presented an online webinar or at MOTM or pre-conference
Volunteer - could be current or current and past volunteers for the for group
Committee Member
Founding Member
Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze contributors which is a wider acknowledgement of 'points' as a member moves up the contribution point count, these can be 'awarded' through workflow rules. Once you reach a level, it 'sticks' rather than a race to the top of the point chart. We can decide how the points are counted too.
These ribbons and badges are visible when you click on the members profile instead of the current leader board at the bottom of the desktop app page.

I've been reviewing the PDF to give some feedback but wanted to see your thoughts on the purpose.
Question -- are the points something we want to have? Do you think members will care enough about it to participate?

I would hate to see people try to game these points like they gamed the Whova apps.
100 % agree. I did bring this up with Whova during the post event review as a feature that should be optional or allow monitoring or not award points for 'waldo' remarks. Could not belive the number of "posted here" remarks on Whova just to game the system. Obviously that was not their intent and when we read through the posts, they saw the problem and are looking into options to fix it. They may come up with a 'best/like' remark option to overcome some of it.

I don't really pay much attention to <g class="gr_ gr_77 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="77" data-gr-id="77">number</g> of posts or points so I don't have an opinion one way or the other on this. I would hate to see people try to game these points like they gamed the Whova apps.
The most interesting thing might be the "best answer" which I'm not sure how we vote on that (maybe by the "recommend" button)
