  • 1.  Changing Item Product Type from Finished Good to Kit

I need to change about 50 items' Product Type from Finished Good to Kit, but I can't (either via Item Maint or VI) because "qty/value exists" - even if it's just a qty of 1 'on WO' for example; but I do also have some items with qtys 'on hand', 'on SO', etc.  So for these 50 items I'd like to just edit the Product Type field in ci_item via DFDM.  Can anyone think of any implications in doing this?

I’ve definitely done this but usually only for one or two items. If there is an issue I haven’t seen it. I think I asked a similar question maybe a year ago and don’t recall there being much feedback about bad experiences.

@Brett Zimmerman  You should be aware that when you change to kit, the components are not going to be relieved from inventory, and the kit item will be relieved from finished goods, if the item was finished good when it was entered on the existing sales order.  For example, item ABC is finished goods and entered on a sales order.  You use DFDM to change the product type from finished goods to kit, then use kit maintenance to create a kit with components.  When the sales order is invoiced, quantity on hand for item ABC will be decreased and the quantity on hand for the components for the new kit will not be decreased.  This behavior is the opposite of what one would expect for a kit item,, ie the quantity on hand for the kit item code will remain unchanged and the components will back flush inventory when the sales journal is updated.

Thanks, @Doug Higgs, good point, although we're not too concerned with existing S/O Entry data, primarily because the client's data already has issues.
Thanks, @Wayne Schulz.  I did initially find some similar threads here about changing the Product Type (incl your postings), although most related to not being able to change it due to an existing BOM, of which the BOM just needed to be temporarily deleted and then re-created.  I didn't happen to come across this exact situation but I agree that I'm not expecting any major downsides in doing this, especially since the client's data is already partially compromised.
