Can you install 64-bit Sage but install 32-bit ODBC on a specific workstation that runs a 32-bit app?

  • 1.  Can you install 64-bit Sage but install 32-bit ODBC on a specific workstation that runs a 32-bit app?

    Posted 08-18-2023 13:37

I'm planning on installing 64-bit Sage Advanced v2023.1.  Client IT claims that one app they run on a workstation is 32-bit. (a label-printing app), and is asking if we can install 32-bit ODBC or 32-bit workstation setup on that computer.

    1. I'm guessing that once you've made the 64/32 bit decision for the server, workstation setup follow the server version.  Is that correct?
    2. If so, is there a way to install 32-bit ODBC on a workstation where the version is 64-bit?

Are you asking if you can install both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of Crystal Reports

Does the label printing app need to use the ProvideX ODBC driver?  If not then you should be able to install 64-bit Sage 100 on the workstation.  Since it's easy to switch between 32-bit and 64-bit Sage 100, it should be easy to test.  If the label printing app uses the ProvideX ODBC driver, and you install Sage 100 64-bit, then you most likely need the 64 bit version of the labeling app.  If the labeling app is Bartender then almost all of the versions in the last 10 years have a 64 bit option.

First try to install the 64-bit workstation, which might include the 32-bit ODBC driver.

Otherwise I think you'd have to change the server to 32-bit, install the workstation, then change back.

(Or just copy a bare-bones Standard MAS90 folder to the machine and install the workstation from that...).

Oh, so it may be possible to run a 32-bit workstation with 64-bit server?  Interesting, I'll have to try that.  I'm reaching back out to IT.  The program they use is LabelView, and their website says it supports 64-bit.

No, you can't run a 32-bit workstation when the server is 64-bit, but ODBC is separate.  You only need the ODBC driver for the program architecture being used (eg. 64-bit Excel querying 32-bit Sage 100).

Ok, so server & workstation have to be the same, but theoretically you could run 64-bit Sage and have a 32-bit ODBC installed?  Or, maybe both 32 & 64-bit are installed.

On my laptop running 2023 64 bit, there is a 32 bit ODBC driver.  I installed 2023 as 64 bit, so looks like both get installed.

If there was a 32-bit app that used the Sage 32-bit ODBC driver to access Sage 100 and Sage 100 was set to 64 bit then I am reasonably certain the ODBC connection will fail. Iv'e tried to work around these driver / bit issues with Bartender and the only way I could get the ODBC integration to work was to have the same "bit" versions of both the app, Sage 100, and the ProvideX driver.  If you don;t need the ODBC integration between Sage and the app then it's a different issue, and maybe a different solution.

    Doug,

Was that an Advanced system with CS-ODBC?  I'd imagine that might have problems with architecture mismatch, but ODBC should be completely independent of the system architecture.  You can absolutely use a 64-bit ODBC query against a 32-bit system (we do that all the time, for the past decade), and I can't see why the other way would be any different.

BOI, the architecture needs to match for sure, but not ODBC.

So if the website says they have a 64 bit for the software, it might be time for the client to update the software to a current version.  To paraphrase Nancy Reagan, "Just say no to supporting 32-bit software"

It is Sage 100 version 2021 Standard 32 bit.  Bartender is on a Windows 10 workstation.  I couldn't get Bartender v2022 64 bit odbc connection to Sage 100 to work.  This was about a year ago.  After researching, the easy solution was install the 32 bit Bartender.  Maybe there is another alternative.
