Can anyone offer the easiest way to determine if a laptop has a built-in mic? I think doing a quick test with the built-in Sound Recorder that comes with Windows should do the trick but I get the sense the Sound Recorder doesn't always work.

Go to start, programs, accesorries, entertainment, sound recorder, and press the record button. start talking really loud, and if when you play it back ,you hear what you said, there is a microphone. Also check for a microphone jack on the side.

Thanks. Yes, I planned on using the Sound Recorder (above); just don't have the computer in front of me, and will likely need to walk a VERY novice person thru it. Btw, my computer does have a built-in mic, and also has a mic jack on the side.

Just check the sound mixer and go to properties. It will show you your soundcard and any camera that might have a mic on it in the mixer device. If you have the option for recording you have something on that device that can record sound. If you see a soundcard and it is a desktop it normally needs an external mic.If you see a camera listed and you have the option to choose recording then you probably have a built in mic on it. Depending on the machine (dell service tag) you can look up the manufacture info and see if it had a mic on it. Hope that helps.
