Can anyone give me performance feedback on using a SQL linked server to connect to Sage 100 in SQL Server 2008, 2010, vs 2012? I'm working on a project now and might put the brakes on if performance will be significantly improved by upgrading SQL first.

I haven't noticed any real performance difference in SQL 2008/2012/2014 when connecting to Providex as a Linked Server. It's usually workable for adhoc reporting, although it feels like every query ends up with a full sequential table scan. Maybe Alnoor can confirm if the table indexes are actually used over ODBC?

Kathryn, the performance of your reporting, if that's what you're interested in, *will* significantly improve by upgrading to SQL first. SQL Server has to use ODBC to link to the ProvideX tables and anytime you put ODBC in he middle, you are slowing down retrieval significantly, regardless of whether the queries are in SQL Server. ODBC does pay attention to the indexes, but it's just slow, especially when compared to SQL Server, which is remarkably fast when retrieving.

@PhilipWhirley I'd upgrade them to Sage Premium in a heartbeat but they use Job Cost. I'm struggling with ODBC timeout errors in Access so that's one of the drivers. Also, I can run the updates after hours so speed of extract is not such an issue.

Are you using pass-through queries in Access? Pass-through queries are faster and usually eliminate time-outs. Also, in the odbc properties for Access you can increase the time-out settings.

Using pass through queries (learned that from Big Louie a million years ago) and have adjusted the query property timeout to zero.

Can anyone provide updated performance knowledge on Sage Premium, version 2019 or 2020, with JobOps/Operations Management installed?
