I was wondering if my high level SQL Express question below at the bottom is possible.
A customer is using Sage 100 v2019 Premium using SQL Express. YES the MAS_xxx and MAS_System databases are on Express and YES it is working and has been for several years now. I don't really know how nor knew it was even possible but apparently that's the case and Sage Support was involved with it. There is a long and sordid backstory but my role / involvement is new.
Customer asked me to do following. I already offered similar alternate solutions involving licensed SQL Servers but they declined those because they will be on a different ERP platform in a few years and don't want to make any large capital investments.
** In their data center where Sage 100 app server and SQL Express server VMs exist, they want to add a 3rd VM to also run SQL Express but have a Data Warehouse DB. They want me to create a Linked Server there to pull specific MAS_xxx tables from the production Sage 100 system. I would be pulling and importing data into the Data Warehouse DB (doing INSERTs and smart UPDATEs).
Question: Can a SQL Express Linked Server pull data from another SQL Express instance / database? I'm wondering if there are any restrictions.
Several times I've used Express to pull ProvideX data from an Advanced or Standard system (either for importing or just SELECT query purposes). NOT sure here where both sides are SQL Express databases.
