I've been a BOD member for about 5 years; this is my last. Out of the 5 members, 4 are officers with varying degrees of time demands.

To be an effective Board member, not considering the officer roles, you should plan on at least 2-4 hrs monthly. The meeting itself is 1 1/2, but you can easily spend several more keeping up on the HL themes and other issues. There is a limit to how much discussion can happen in a 90-minute meeting with more than a couple topics, so calls with other BOD or Exec Dir are not uncommon.

Compared to many other volunteer BODs, 90 Minds' is pretty active. But there is lots of satisfaction possible not only because of the people, but because your unique experiences and perspectives can have measurable impact on the group's thinking. You also might well expand your expertise beyond the current - @Karen O'Lane might speak to that!
