Hi Clark,
You are correct it is still not an ad-hoc query tool. You have to use a pre-defined view and do whatever you can with it. You can't see data past the primary and secondary tables. Also, if you have any need to bend, slice, dice, cube, customize the data in any way beyond what the views provide you, then just like you said Excel with Power Query and/or Power Pivot is the way to go. Very very glad to hear you're teaching it as MotM pre-conference. Way to go!

Hi Alnoor,
You might be a good one to ask about BIE.
My experience is that it never quite made it as an ad-hoc data query tool for Sage. The separate Header/Detail structure is a PITA.
In the 4 years I was out of the Sage world, it doesn't seem to have changed much.
Do you have any different insights?
I usually use excel queries since they are so much more flexible. Especially with Power Query & Power Pivot, which I'll be teaching at MOTM :)

If you mean can you create NEW views where you join your own tables (and SQL views like Sage 500) then No. It does require an MD. Having helped create BIE views for J/C, I can say the developer tool is certainly interesting but not really designed for complex views if that's what you're after.
