Yes, you read that right. I have a client who still uses this outdated bit of software. And it's been working fine until a couple of weeks ago when we migrated them to v2024 and a new server. Of course nobody mentioned to me that they had a couple of emails that they regularly receive - but a bit of sleuthing (and a deep dive into my memory banks) and we discovered this on the old server.

I have rerouted the DSN to the new server, but it's still not reading the data correctly. I'm going to do some digging to see if I can fix it, but here's what I am hoping to find out from the folks here:

    1. Has anyone tried to get Business Alerts to work with a "new" version, like 2023 or 2024?
    2. If I can't convince them to go to KnowledgeSync, is there any chance I can find an installation routine and install this on a newer server (for the sake of argument, let's say it's Windows 2019).

If the reports / alerts don't include any "new/changed record" type jobs, just convert everything to Visual Cut.  That's what we've done with most of our old Business Alerts clients.

If they are unwilling to try Visual Cut or SAW, try an Access DB with PassThruQueries pointed to the Sage database.  Point BA to the Access  PTQ tables which are pulling data from Sage.  Still works for us.

What @Kevin Moyes said. If you go Visual Cut - download the PDF manual into your favorite AI and it will greatly help you with formatting command line arguments and understand other configuration options.

    Thanks Guys,

I used VC years ago when I was at Blytheco. Pretty slick and the interface was fairly straightforward. Not sure how much it's changed of late.

Wayne, I have not yet flipped the switch on AI as I am very suspicious by nature. Can you recommend a good (and maybe free) entry point into that world? I have pretty much just glanced over some of your (and others') posts that discuss it.

I use ChatGPT or Gemini ( Google ).

It's quite amazing. I had a project about 6 months ago where I had to write a bunch of batch files and use Visual Cut. Using AI to give me the syntax and debug various portions of code was an amazing shortcut.

It's also great on creating Crystal Report formulas and just about anything else.

And for research beyond just coding and formulas I am not almost always using the "Deep Research" function from both Chat GPT and Gemini. It does a great job of going back and create a briefing about any type of topic. My test case has always been "Tell me about the history of State of the Art Accounting Software". In the early days it seemed to hallucinate and make stuff up. I create the same test last night and so far as I can tell it's accurate.

Example ( from my Chat GPT Deep Research )

Wow Wayne!  That is massively impressive.  Not sure it I'm more impressed with you for asking the question, or with AI for coming up with a very detailed and valid history of State of the Art.  Wow!  Great job!

There is a recorded webinar in the Google Drive, if you want a refresher.

Ido does add new features, and the manual does a good job at documenting new features by version, but the big picture is the same.

There is also a new program (ActionQ) which can do new/changed record alerts, check folders for new files... which we've deployed a couple places, and while a bit rough around the edges, it does work nicely.
