I have a little bit of a different perspective on the situation.

Part of the problem is that when we do let the general membership know what's involved, they decide they aren't quite ready to be that committed. Many employees don't have the freedom to commit their time to activities like 90 Minds' committees or the board. We found some of that out when we recruited Alan and Karen. We had a list of potential candidates that Moira had put together and we had voted on which ones to reach out to. Fortunately, the best agreed. :)

We can also look in the Google Sheet at the people who applied in 2019.

Moira did scare some away. That's absolutely true. Also, some members aren't prepared to be criticized the way some of the members like to criticize.

    I agree.

The original strategy for growing members into board members was through committee involvement. I think this should be the focus in general, as it helps members who haven't done much similar volunteering in other orgs understand how they might grow through the experience.

We have no requirement that BOD members be members of 90 Minds. We can look outside. Shawn Slavin is a theoretical example. Anne's brings a needed gust of outside experiences to help us think about this stuff more broadly. A BOD with 1 or 2 members with outside, roughly relevant experience is a good thing. (I still think 5 members is too small ...)

Not to put too fine a point on it, but we can't really run competing candidates if we don't get the candidates first. Any chance we can reach back to those who complained/commented and ask them what they suggest to do?

    We can ask.

If we fix the process and the additional candidates don't show up, we can make that part of the presentation at the election. All we can do is do our part.

I suspect we may get more applicants just in not having Moira as ED.

Robert is absolutely right about members not having the freedom to invest time. I have an easy-going boss who recognizes the value of this organization. Plus, Jim hooked me with "it only takes a couple of hours a month". LOL. I've found that my role takes as much time as I have available and want to put into it. So, does the candidate have a vision of helping to make the organization better? If so, this job's for you.

To those who have expressed negative criticism, I have said "I value your perspective. Make your voice heard by volunteering."

I love all of this.   We know the negatives... time... and time lol.

I think the approach has to focus on the benefits - because there are many!   Here are some off the top of my head (please feel free to add).

    • Supplement your professional CV
    • Grow your professional brand
    • Improve strategic skills
    • Develop interpersonal and professional skills
    • Support initiatives your passionate about
    • Gain access and insight to industry movement or trends
    • Build your confidence and decision-making abilities
    • Access to a broader network
    • Collaboration (or debate) with a team
    • Have your voice heard

This strikes me as a good open-ended question to throw out and share at the roundtable..
