BIE Views will not load - v2021 Premium

  • 1.  BIE Views will not load - v2021 Premium

    Posted 06-06-2022 13:06
Have a brand new client using v2021 Premium. I can't get the BIE views to populate at all, in any module, on any machine. The screen opens, but its all blank. It's what we would see when we had the fix to switch to Classic & then back to Standard view, but don't have that option now. I've called Sage & they can't figure it out either.

    1. Doesn't work on the Sage server or the RDS machines. No local workstations installed.
    2. Doesn't matter if I run Sage as Admin, or have the domain admin login as him on the Sage server & try it.
    3. Anti-virus is off.
    4. The ViewsPath in the registry is correct
    5. I've deleted the Explorer subkey in the registry & let it recreate itself.
    6. I've renamed the Sage 100 folder on the C drive & let it recreate itself.
    7. Verified permissions are set to Full Control everywhere

Anything else I could try? Thx!

@Dana Young At some point, all the Common Components moved to C:\ProgramData\Sage\Common Components

Have you tried re-registering the ExTask.dll yet? You may need to open an administrator command prompt and run regsvr32 that way. Don't have the Launcher open when you do it. Another option is to run regcom.bat in that cmd prompt. It has a PAUSE at the end and should tell you if any components failed to register.

I ran the regcom.bat & it said all components registered successfully but didn't fix it.

    I see that dll here: C:\Sage\Sage 100 Workstation\MAS90\Home\Microsoft.NET\Sage.ExTask
so I did REGSVR32 & got an error

Now that Sage forces the Standard view it will take a few steps to address the issue you are talking about.

Issue: Business Insights Explorer Views appear blank. No data is populated in the grids.

    Resolution:

    1. Logout of Sage 100
    2. Run Regedit.exe
    3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sage Software\BIE Explorer\Explorer
    4. Right-Click Explorer and choose Rename and give it and new name.
    5. Login to Sage 100
    6. Go to Business Insights, Explorer, select a View
    7. Data should now populate in the Explorer view grids.
    8. A new Windows Registry Key should have been created.

The illustration below shows the Windows Registry Key for logon VEN user.  The steps above will need to be completed for each user.

    Ok give this a shot.

    1. From the users Windows Explorer go to C:\Users\(user windows logon)\Documents folder
    2. Rename the "Sage100" folder
    3. Logon to Sage and try to open a viewer now
    4. In the background Sage has created a new "Sage100" folder
    5. If it worked great log out of Sage
    6. Go to the renamed "Sage100" folder
    7. If users has a Favorite.json file and its big copy that back to the new "Sage100" folder that just got created
    8. Their favorites will now be back in place
    9. Logon one more time and make sure Sage is happy

At this point, if it was me, I would complete this on a local workstation with a user that has the correct rights.  If none of these methods worked from Alnoor & I then it has to be the way the RDS server is configured or the rights that these users have.

One more thing I just thought of.  I noticed as of Sage 2020 that on the workstation installation itself I had to change the rights of the Sage folder that gets created.   For the workstation installation go to the Sage folder created during the install process.  Right click on folder and select Properties.  Now click on Security tab.  Change rights for "Users" or special group defined by IT and give full rights.  With adequate rights does this make the RDS happy?  Sheesh got to love when machines and software fight.

I'm going to add one more thing to Carmen's suggestions (which I think is promising as many times on RDS / Citrix systems, the location where Wkstn Setup was run remains too locked down which also leads one to wonder if running in Mas90 mode would work).

If a permissions issue is occurring as we all suspect, the Process Monitor (click here ProcMon) tool is a good way to find out.  You can tell IT this is a well known Microsoft tool of the SysInternals family. After you install it, or install the whole suite of tools , do the following:

    1. Rt-click run as Admin on ProcMon.exe
    2. Do a Ctrl-E right away to disable the trace that started auto running.
    3. You can optionally do a Ctrl-L and add Include filters by Process Name on all the Sage EXEs under \mas90. This will make for a smaller trace.
    4. Start Sage normally and get to the point where you are about to run a BIE view.
    5. Do a Ctrl-E on the ProcMon window to start the trace.
    6. Run the BIE view.
    7. Immediately go back to Procmon and do Ctrl-E to stop the trace.
    8. Now from the File menu you can save the trace to tab delimited or CSV file (can't remember which one).
    9. Find a machine with Excel installed and open it there.
    10. Do a Ctrl F and search for ACCESS DENIED. If you find it click on Data tab choose Sort and sort results by that column then the Date/Time column as the 2nd sort level. This will make all the ACCESS DENIED errors float to the top. Now you can see the file or registry key that is inaccessible.
    11. But if you get no ACCESS DENIED, do it all over again but this time start trace where you click the Sage icon to start up. Stop the trace once the Launcher appears.

    Hope that helps.

@Alnoor Cassim I ran the Procmon many times & this keeps coming up, any idea what this is? It came up on the Views & also when launching Sage.
Even if I adjust permissions in the registry, it doesn't make a difference on this one & keeps denying access.

@Carmen Cruz I had them install all those prereqs, re-installed the workstation & it didn't help.

Dana - If you're getting an ACCESS DENIED on that key then that's what it means and it can certainly be tricky to adjust the permissions. Within the registry editor, under Advanced there's an Effective Access tab where you can check to see if a Windows user effectively has the access that you think has been granted. Also to eliminate some complexity, you should try running in Mas90 Mode. From what I'm able to find, this key is laid down by Dell server software called PowerPath, used for on Hyper-V and VMWare hosts. Below is a product description. My gut feel is ask IT to see if there's an updated driver for PowerPath that fixes this issue, or maybe permissions are set by this app itself. If there's no driver update or anything to configure in the app, show him/her the results of your trace and ask if they can adjust the permissions.

Dell PowerPath is host-based software that provides automated data path management and load with support 10-balancing capabilities for heterogeneous server, network and Dell storage deployed in physical and virtual environments. It enables you to meet your aggressive service levels with the highest application availability and performance, and with all the advantages of the industry's leading information storage systems. The Dell PowerPath family includes PowerPath Multi-pathing for physical environments including Windows and Linux, and PowerPath/VE Multi-pathing for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual

x-ref to what seems like one of the most complete Sage KB articles on this topic:

Business Insights Explorer Views appear blank or no data appears in panes

Maybe uninstall and then reinstall wksetup as local admin

@Wayne Schulz thanks, but I tried all of these, called Sage, & they had me go through them again so no luck.

@Alnoor Cassim & @Carmen Cruz I had the system admin login as him & try it, still doesn't work.
I have full permissions on every Sage folder I can find.
Its doing this on both the Sage server & the RDS server.

I just uninstalled the workstation. Turned UAC off. Rebooted the Sage server. Installed as Admin. I am a local admin as well. Checked the folders & I have full permissions on the C drive Sage folder, the network Sage folder, the Documents folder for my user, the Sage folders in ProgramData, none of it helps.
    I tried MAS90 mode, doesn't help.
I tried Run as Administrator, doesn't help.
I tried Compatibility mode, doesn't help.

I would not be surprised if this is permissions related, but I can't find it.
This is also Windows Server 2022 Standard, which is my first one that I've seen but it is approved by Sage.
The RDS servers are Windows Server 2019 Standard.

I will get with their IT about installing the ProcMon tool tomorrow. Hopefully it will tell me something!
    Thanks for all the suggestions!!

I have had numerous odd problems with BIE not loading data.  The one trick that worked for me was to assign a Theme code to the user, which you can do this with Premium.

@Jane Scanlan oh, you got me excited.. but it didn't fix it.

I tried assigning a theme to my user, logged out & back in, views still don't work.
I have a test company with a company theme, doesn't work there either.
I then tried different layout styles, doesn't matter.
I also thought well maybe the application scaling or screen resolution. The current resolution only allowed default, so I increased the resolution, but it didn't fix it. I could then try Medium application scaling, that didn't help it either.

I will take anyone's shot in the dark here.

Attached are the minimum files that I always install on a workstation, server, RDS before Sage even sees it.  It just might be missing some stuff Sage still may be using pieces of.  Its is worth a try for sure.   If they have their own IT have them install the Windows items below.  I would put them on them to get this done since well.... it is their job.

    • Unzip files uploaded.
    • Copy .bat to server/station
    • Double click on file
    • Results will tell you what level .Net is installed on their system.
    • You want them on 4.8.
    • Open Control Panel / Programs and Features.
    • Sort what is installed by name.
    • See if they have all their Redistributables installed:
    • 64bit & 32bit 2005,2008,2010,2012,2013,2015,2017,2019
    • If a newer version is already installed of a specific level it will not allow and just close and move on
    • New servers put in the last few and not even both versions
    • Install them all.
    • You do NOT need to uninstall the ones that are there even if they are newer level.  Not required.
    • Uninstall Workstation.
    • Go to Windows \SYSWow64 and remove PVX*.* files. (3 if they exist).
    • Go to C:\ProgramData\Sage
    • Rename Common Components
    • Install .Net 4.8 if needed
    • Reboot as needed
    • Now do a new installation of Sage workstation
    • KICK THE DAMN SERVER
    • Test to see if that finally makes it happy

This feature does not apply to Sage 100 Premium as SQL version uses ADO over ODBC.  However, this piece of the convo string on that article might.

Use DFDM on SY_User. Remove any "blank" records.

@Dana Young I use Premium in house,  Give this a shot.

    Open RegEdit,
    navigate to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sage Software\BIE Explorer\Products\MAS90

Note the Views Path does not have a FULL location (likely something like   "...\Mas90\BIEXploreViews...". Change that to the full path as shown: in the screenshot. Good Luck!! Hope it works for you like it does for me!

    I have a new clue...
If I run this in the old Classic view, the BIE view gets an error that doesn't show up in Standard view:

But, all other reports run fine, standard & custom off the menus. I've verified that the permissions are fine for the MAS_Reports user in SQL. I've removed the dbreader permissions on the MAS databases & then added them back, but it didn't help.

Any idea why only BIE Views would throw this permission error but no other reports or areas?
