Yes, Wayne. Since anybody selling online has multi-state tax liability, Avalara knows you must do it. The cost of self-compliance is even higher than Avalara's fees. So, their pricing is truly value pricing against alternative solution (self service) for a necessary result.
I tell customers this is the same thing as credit card/ACH fees. They've become a necessary cost of doing business.
And the Avalara's of the world know it.

I think - but don't know firsthand - that this is Vertex's stance as well. Personally my recommendation to any company where sales tax is strategic to their current or planned business operations is that they need to budget for Avalara and expect it to be an expensive recurring project.

I spoke to TaxJar a few years ago and while they will offer help to develop an integration to ERP software, they won't pay for it like Avalara does.

I agree completely that a competitor to Avalara is sorely needed in this market.
I'm not sure why this is such a hard market for a competitor to compete in. The Avalara solution seems like it's 10 miles wide and half an inch thick in terms of functionally ( the cracks are easily visible the first time you call for any type of support ). I'm ready to describe Avalara as an enterprise solution which means you have a room of five programmers/consultants, a project manager and a CFO in order to get it implemented for anything other than simple swapping in of the AVATAX sales tax code ( which works wonderfully ). TLDR - Avalara worked great until the damn marketplaces and ecommerce sites came along.
Vertex seems to have moved and left no forwarding number for any Sage 100 v2022 or higher end users.
Every ERP publisher has such a love affair with recurring revenue that I'm surprised that there are not several viable competing sales tax integrations.
