From a client using Avalara concerned about the monthly costs........

I had a meeting with a competitor to Avalara called TaxJar.

      *   TaxJar is half the cost and their functionality is just as good and in some cases better than Avalara.

      *   Plus they have an out of the box integration with Magento.

This client uses Magento for their website.  Integration is through Certipro.

    Looking for feedback on TaxJar.

    Thanks in advance.

Would love to see a real competitor for Avalara, but not sure this would be it for Sage-only sales tax processing. Does this client sell ONLY through Magento?

I agree completely that a competitor to Avalara is sorely needed in this market.

I'm not sure why this is such a hard market for a competitor to compete in. The Avalara solution seems like it's 10 miles wide and half an inch thick in terms of functionally ( the cracks are easily visible the first time you call for any type of support ). I'm ready to describe Avalara as an enterprise solution which means you have a room of five programmers/consultants, a project manager and a CFO in order to get it implemented for anything other than simple swapping in of the AVATAX sales tax code ( which works wonderfully ). TLDR - Avalara worked great until the damn marketplaces and ecommerce sites came along.

Vertex seems to have moved and left no forwarding number for any Sage 100 v2022 or higher end users.

Every ERP publisher has such a love affair with recurring revenue that I'm surprised that there are not several viable competing sales tax integrations.

I spoke to TaxJar a few years ago and while they will offer help to develop an integration to ERP software, they won't pay for it like Avalara does.

I think - but don't know firsthand - that this is Vertex's stance as well. Personally my recommendation to any company where sales tax is strategic to their current or planned business operations is that they need to budget for Avalara and expect it to be an expensive recurring project.

Yes, Wayne. Since anybody selling online has multi-state tax liability, Avalara knows you must do it. The cost of self-compliance is even higher than Avalara's fees. So, their pricing is truly value pricing against alternative solution (self service) for a necessary result.

I tell customers this is the same thing as credit card/ACH fees. They've become a necessary cost of doing business.

And the Avalara's of the world know it.

This last 6 months we've had two clients come to us where Avalara raised their new year contract for each client 2 - 3 fold.  One went from 14,500 to 34,000 and Avalara's explanation was price increases....I had to actually get Sage involved, one of them dropped a transaction tier but we were able to keep the costs almost the same year over year with the dropped tier and Sage's involvement.  The one from 14,500 to 34,000 is still under "negotiation".  My understanding is Sage and Avalara had this distribution / manufacturing package back in covid time (19/20/21) and it basically expired now and people that signed up during that time are going to start seeing some big increases......I would love Tax Jar to step in, well anyone to step in.....

Update on what @Chris Mengerink posted a couple of days ago, Avalara just sent a new quote and told the client (and this is a direct quote from the email):

Also: I would highly advise e-signing the quote prior to Dec 31st, as Avalara is instituting price increase on all products in January.
