We are in late-stage of Avalara implementation for a customer. This is our first.

    There are 3 tax schedules that Avalara uses: <g class="gr_ gr_16 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="16" data-gr-id="16">AVATAX</g>, AVATAXPOD (Point of Destination), and <g class="gr_ gr_18 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="18" data-gr-id="18">AVATAXPOS</g> (Point of Origin).

We are having trouble getting a clear, timely answer from Avalara about how & when these three are used. Can anybody shed some light on this?

    From Avalara Help: https://help.avalara.com/Frequently_Asked_Questions/Miscellaneous/What_is_the_difference_between_AVATAX%2C_AVATAX-POD%2C_and_AVATAX-POS_Tax_Schedule_IDs%3F

    • The AvaTax tax schedules control how the Origin and Destination addresses are used for tax calculation. The AVATAX schedule sets the Origin address to either your company address or the warehouse address. This schedule allows the service to determine whether the sourcing is from the Destination or the Origin.
    • The AVATAX-POD (Point of Destination) schedule forces the tax calculation to be based off the Destination address.
    • The AVATAX-POS (Point of Sale) schedule forces the tax calculation to be based off the Origin address

    Thanks!

I went further down that FAQ path and confirmed that <g class="gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="29" data-gr-id="29">AVATAX</g> schedule means that Avalara uses the rules it has about the state(s) involved as to whether it uses Origin or Destination.

Interstate sales are always <g class="gr_ gr_144 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="144" data-gr-id="144">Destination</g>. Intrastate sales rely on the state rules and product type (services are often destination). Defining the products sold with the correct Avalara Type (Service, Digital, etc.) is important here.
