  • 1.  Avalara Support - How do you actually get it?

    Posted 02-05-2026 16:13

I'm just curious if anyone has found the magic trick to getting support for your client that is actually useful with Avalara?  They reach out directly thru the portal, got what I would deem a level one response that did not remotely actually answer the question.  Then crickets....so of course they contact me and well I'm not up on my California item tax law and how to apply that in Avalara when it comes to partial exemption on items that are research & development....I just thought I'd ask before I launch myself out into the void and wait forever to get a response and weed my way thru people who don't provide answers.....

What I've done is first tried the Avalara KB - https://knowledge.avalara.com/

At the same time I usually advise the client to open a support ticket through the portal. My experience has been much the same as yours. It is either underwhelming or the person responding knows less than I do and they "transfer" me to someone else.

You might check with @Bob Pfahnl who does a lot of work with Avalara

Basic Support is Case based and outsourced to India.  They can purchase a Support plan and talk to someone, from India.  Generally, Level 1 Support hasn't a clue about ERP integration, and for sure does not know how the Sage 100 integration works with exemption certificates, Avalara Tax Codes, and Entity Use Codes, among other salient features.

What is your question?  What version of Sage?  Are they using ECM?  Native Sage exemption functionality?

California has a partial manufacturing exemption.  Enter Code I (eye) in the Entity Use Code field on the Line(s) of the Sales Order/Invoice.  This override will have no effect if you have anything in the Exemption fields or a Resale or other valid exemption certificate exists in ECM.

Thank you both, Avalara I know has been very frustrating for a lot of our clients that purchase it when it comes to support, even though Avalara seems to enjoy charging for that support.....Bob I messaged you directly to see what options we have.

I scream, yell and cuss at the direct Avalara contacts I have to get support.  My Avalara sales rep (Alexandria Lyons) is beyond fantastic and she helps me get support.  It's unfortunate their support is so bad.
