API between GL and Power BI

  • 1.  API between GL and Power BI

We have a client who would like to have am API between their Sage 100 General Ledger and Microsoft Power BI.  I checked with ROI/DSD and they have not yet developed an API for GL.  Has anyone else done this?  TIA!

Our team does a lot of Power BI for clients.
Can we discuss what your 'API' needs are? We can help you anywhere on the Power app spectrum, ranging from routine Power BI report setup to comprehensive Power BI reporting systems that include embedded Power Apps to enable related ERP data updates.

Just making sure I replied to you (I thought I did, but I don't see that thread here).  They're already using Power PI and have for quite some time - they just want to have an API between their existing Power BI and specifically the General Ledger transactions.

@Phil McIntosh - I believe the Sage 100 REST API could be tailored to include GL, couldn't it? I believe it's on the new framework.

    For reference, Sue: https://youtu.be/_5WCb1XTljc
What this is doesn't have GL, but if that module is on the new framework… it could. :)

@Basil Malik Yes GL endpoints could be added to the API, though I agree that for this instance ODBC should be sufficient.

    Sue,

I have been linking Sage 100 to PowerBI for a few years using the 64-bit ODBC driver Sage provides. This should give you all you need; I don't think you need an API unless there is something you are trying to do that I am not thinking of?

Good point,@Preston Weber! The 32/64-bit ODBC driver is actually the most cost effective route. If the customer is on Premium, even better.

Yes, using the ODBC driver to connect to Power BI works great. It is probably the best option.

We do have customers using our SDE API to Sage 100 with Power BI.

@Todd Martin and @Basil Malik Wow those offerings are fantastic for Sage 100 in the Web world! In case something more local would fit @Sue Bennett 's need to fit between G/L and Power BI, I offer a free open-source Power Query example of GL access in the form of a 12-Period Trial Balance report. It uses NO MACROS and accesses the read-only ODBC (SOTAMAS90).This file can be found as a Library entry here on 90Minds and there is also a "Help" worksheet that has a graphic of the steps involved in the Data Source Settings configuration.

A 13-Period version that works with non-calendar year setups is available if one is not inclined to work it out with this learning example.
