Yes, using the ODBC driver to connect to Power BI works great. It is probably the best option.
We do have customers using our SDE API to Sage 100 with Power BI.

I have been linking Sage 100 to PowerBI for a few years using the 64-bit ODBC driver Sage provides. This should give you all you need; I don't think you need an API unless there is something you are trying to do that I am not thinking of?
