@Wayne Schulz Thank you! I just set up the $50 a month Cloud PC. I wish they had a configuration with more than 256GB of storage however it is still a great option.
I have a similar issue. My Dell Inspiron 15 sometimes won't charge when the power cord in plugged in. if the battery goes to 0 the computer is supposed to still work however it makes me very nervous. Having the various VPNs on the Cloud PC is a great idea. I can use any of my old laptops and not have to worry if one of them crashes. Also, re-installing all of the programs is always the worst part of buying a new laptop.. not to mention the cost.

This is not a match to what you're looking to do but may be of some interest.
My Dell XPS 15 (only about 3 years old) bit the dust a couple of months ago.
I'm now using a Microsoft Cloud PC which I pay about $50/mo for. This is a single workstation that I RDP into from any computer. I have Sage 100 setup on there for local usage and 90% of my use is to remotely connect to this Windows machine and then I RDP out to a customer's site using their VPN of choice.
I save all the VPN downloads and configured RDP clients in a Google Drive. I have one folder for each customer. I then sync this Google drive to my Microsoft Cloud PC. My goal is to have each VPN and RDP client documented so that even if I need to reinstall the VPN it's something I can do quickly and on-the-fly. I don't do much development work aside from Crystal Reports so I am not concerned with using a virtual machine for each customer ( although I can't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind ). To retain credentials for each customer I use 1Password.
I'm pretty sure that you can configure much more powerful remote computers for not much more money if you were to really look around.
Again, this is probably not what you're looking for but may be of some interest to anyone who is looking for a different option to configure a Windows computer for supporting customers.
Now that I have this Cloud PC as my base computer I can connect to it from:
- MacBook Pro
- MacBook Air
- Mac Mini
- iPad
- Windows computer (If I buy another )
- iPhone/Android ( haven't tried this but think it's possible )
For me this eliminates the one "point of failure" that relies on my Windows laptop and on my having a good backup/spare Windows laptop should something fail with my primary computer.
