Anyone seen this paperless office 4.5.3 message - The email engine cannot be started. No PDFs can be E-Mailed. Error Details: Unable to verify SMTP Connection The customer complains this is a legacy issue on a 64 bit OS -- they are using Windows 7 Professional - SP1 - 64 Bit OS

I think it is more likely that the IT department doesn't have the correct settings for the e-mail set up. This is always fun because it involves a lot of pushing and shoving between you and the IT boys (girls?). Finally, they relent, make the changes and all is well.

Forgot to add that the customer claims that they can switch workstations and another computer has it working fine. Usual suspects: Anti-Virus, etc are under consideration I don't suspect a wrong email setup because I think that would globally knock down the ability to email.

I get this every so often when I am emailing. I wait a while and then it works again. Usually means my connection to the INternet is shit at that moment. Have a client who also gets it every now and then since they moved to a new office - I suspect the internet connection there isn't quite as good as they had before.

I log into server - works fine. Same user login. Verify info in company maintenance. Logged into users workstation -- as myself (same login) throws the error - even if I try it multiple times.

I tend to think this is a security issue even more. Are they using Exchange?

They are -- and it's possible that it's the user login on the network somehow I guess. When I test the email the PDF is fired off (preview) so I think that part is working ok (paperless) Also wonder if there could be a firewall issue on the computer of this user where perhaps the serve cannot see the workstation. Dunno if this is even a possible factor but just a thought.

Thanks - we are MAS90 though. Puzzling because I can print ok from server and customer claims it's ok from other workstations.

I saw that. I can RDP to server and test email just fine. Drop the RDP and connect to the local user. Error. She claims that another workstation allows for email just not hers and that this is a longer term problem from prior versions.

Does local user have admin rights to her workstation? Log on that WS as admin?

From that problem workstation can you ping the ip address and port? smells to me like a local firewall on that machine is blocking it.

I was able to ping - not sure if I can ping from server back to workstation - I just jotted down the IP of the workstation to test

    Good thought, Mark........

when you pinged, I assume you added :25 since alot of firewalls block outbound port 25 by default as its for email and how most malware sends out spam from infected machines.

Also, pinging from server to workstation probably means nothing. This test and transmission is outbound on port 25, not inbound. I would try and temporarily turn off all firewalls on that workstation and see what happens.

If they are using Exchange (especially 2010), there can also be relay permission issues. Make sure when you test you are sending to an email account which is not in the domain the email is originating from, or you may get ""false positives"".

That was the word I was looking for. Had a client with similar issues that was a ""relay permission

Also make sure they if you are using Exchange 2010 that all the IP's of the client machines are allowed to use the SMTP mail relay.
