Anyone get error-20 in VI imports when trying to strip tilde characters from source-data fields?

A field calculation (in this case, Item #) of Temp001$+STP(Temp002$,3,*"" -/+.&()@""). When you add a tilde after the @ sign, the Calculation is accepted, but It gives an error-20 when you test or run the import. Runs OK without the ""~"" in the stmt.
