Anyone ever tried to do an outside processing transaction without using work order? Have a customer who is trying to figure out how to do costing for an item that gets sent out to be painted, coated, etc...

    Do you mean through BOM?

Yes - if possible. i was trying to see if I could use warehouses to track the location of the item, however i'm not sure how that would help with cost.

Not sure I understand exactly what you are looking for but what about adding a misc charge to the production entry? Maybe you need two different items - one for the raw receipts and then produce the finished item with the additional charges added. Am I on the right track?

Yes, build a structure for the subcontracted material that includes two parts - the raw material they send for subcontracting and a new item for the labor portion. Create the PO using the labor part (that's what they're generally buying is labor) and transfer the raw material to the Vendor Whse. When the part comes in, receive the PO and run a Production Entry which will clear the item out of the Vendor's warehouse and the Labor part in stock. And voila...finished subcontracted part in stock.

I'm so glad you asked that, because I've been doing as stated above but was never sure if that was the best way!

Thank you! That seems to make the most sense, @DebThomas. They generally do two po's, one for the part and one for the labor at the same time. But i think you could almost receive the part (raw) into an outside proc warehouse and then use the 2nd po as informational. Then when they receive the product back they can run the production entry and move it out of the outside proc warehouse to a FG warehouse. I think that's essentially the exact same thing above.

Make sure you create a new Product Line for Subcontract Labor items. It helps running stock reports to make sure that they've cleared the Labor (subcontract) receipts as there should never be on-hand qtys on those items after PE is done.
