In all seriousness though, it's kind of like home alarms. People rarely buy them until after they've had a break in. Then they buy them and religiously use them....for a while. Then over time they get lax, and eventually only set them when they are going out for quite some time....Until they get broken into again.
The same with backups. Companies will put in a backup system, and do the proper offsite rotation and restoration testing. Then over time, (and often 1 or 2 IT guys later) the process gets and more and more lax until...
You get the idea. We get lulled into comfort with safety processes in life. Unless the process self checks itself and automatically notifies you of a problem, most of us due to human nature will let bigger and bigger safety gaps form.
I'm going to do a survey on our own members who should know better than our clients and I'm betting the results won't be pretty.
