No, apparently it was a crappy customer experience. With everything exploding all at the same time, it was just a big bright annoying and short-lived display. I was at home, but people who were there thought it was the show organizer trying to get everyone's attention prior to starting the show. After 30 more minutes of nothing, they knew better and went home.
Apparently, the fireworks company who put on the show said that it is insured for the malfunction, and that the city will get its money back. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
