Any easy way to rename a UDF short of deleting it and walking through the recreation process (including adding back any deleted data)?

Pay an MD lots of money to rewrite the data dictionaries.

I am sure you have already considered the creation of the new and then write an import that reads the table back upon itself to update the new UDF prior to deleting the old.

You can learn to love the old name.

Without changing the actual UDF, can't you just change the description name to appease the customer?

I think they want the actual name to be changed so they have some consistency when they create reports.

I can feel their pain. I have a customer who is re-purposing a UDF called CATEGORY which is now going to be used to flag items for sales bonuses. Category doesn't really tell you anything. Funny, but they didn't even know what it was originally used for and the little data in it wasn't helpful either.

Highly recommend a new one with usable name. I repurposed a UDF with weird name and have nothing but trouble trying to make sense of it now. Not a good coding practice!
