I try to limit running down rabbit holes to when it matters.  I'd warn the customer that there is no easy solution, and any custom modifications will cost more than a penny.  Usually the response I get is that they wanted a free fix... and they don't want to pay big bucks for solving a mere inconvenience.

NOT a rabbit hole!!  The client has moved on, their lookup has been restored to prior functionality which is what they wanted.  I just wanted more so I posted the challenge here hoping that the 90Mind (Borg) collective might have some insight for a workaround.  90 Minds are better than one (Sage mind).  We will assimilate you!  Yes, weird and wacky and of course there are bigger fish out there.  By sharing unusual ideas, we all benefit.
