ACH Processing Time

  • 1.  ACH Processing Time

Client is switching from credit card payments (cash in bank next day) to ACH collection.  Their cash in bank time is now 7 days.  Is this an industry standard deposit time or should they be looking for a new processor?

    I think your question is:

Is it reasonable that an ACH payment takes 7 days to make it's way from initial upload from Sage 100 to the recipients bank account?

My experience with customers who pay me is that I seem to get the funds 2-3 days (frequently sooner ) from when they mention they've sent it. In those cases the customer is using the export the ACH to a file and manually upload to the bank method ( aka free ).

Besides bank delays, Merchant Processors such as Repay will delay the transfer. The risk to all is that it is REALLY easy to make an unapproved transfer which, unlike credit card charge, can't easily (or ever) be reversed. The risk of fraud here is large. So, the Repay's of the world do a significant risk assessment on the Sage client. wanting to enable it. Smaller firms are higher risk so with longer wait times, larger firms with other explicit internal controls are lower risks and get paid faster.

I'm guessing they might be using an outside processor that causes that long of a delay.   I can (and do!) an ACH through the AP module before 5:00 on a Monday, and the Vendor/Employee will have the money in their account the next day.  Same thing with ACH payments that I take out of client's bank accounts for our hosting services – as long as I do it by 5:00 the previous day, the deposit  is in our bank account the next morning.

    So – I think 7 days is a bit of a stretch!

Sue, are you processing through you bank?  Is this integrated with Sage?

The AP is through Sage's ACH payment system, but the AR Deposits are manual.  We could automate that – I just haven't taken the time to do so!

2-3 days funding for ACH transactions is the standard.  Sue is special.  7 days is beyond absurd no matter what Jerry wrote.  ;-)

Hee hee. To be clear, the 3-7 days delay business is when a 3rd party can initiate an ACH pmnt from another's account. This occurs with Repay, Paya, etc when Smartbridge has its customers paying through the merchant processor. I could theoretically put in a manual ACH transfer to my account with the customer approval. Without a delay of the actual funds transfer, there would be no formal recourse.

ACH transactions from my bank to yours is at most 2 business days.

In all seriousness, perhaps more clarity is needed here.  We have most of our customer's payment information entered in through Sage 100 into the processor's vault.  It doesn't matter if it is REPAY, Fortis, Paya/Nuvei, we have both ACH banking information and credit card information.  When we process a payment via credit card, we get the money the next day.  When we process the payment via ACH, we get the money in 2-3 days, most typically 3 days.  Sometimes, the customer or the customer's bank will reject the ACH transaction after it has been funded, and that will initiate an ACH Return where the money is drafted from our bank account automatically.

Is this the process you are referring to @Jerry Norman?

Yes, @Brian Kelly. The 2-3 days is longer than if Repay wasn't in the middle. The next-day credit card payment is possible because laws enable credit card issuers to claw back the money from the banks involved in the event of fraud. No such recourse is legally offered for ACH transfers.
