  • 1.  Ability to encrypt Sage 100 Premium Database?

    Posted 02-21-2024 13:43

Can anyone provide feedback on these questions from a customer:

    1. Is the hard drive or the database on the SQL server that supports MAS100 currently encrypted?
    2. If not encrypted, what method do you recommend for encrypting this server? Microsoft's BitLocker, or would you recommend using another option?
    3. Do you foresee any potential operational issues with MAS100 if the database has been encrypted?

I recall that enabling encryption might have been problematic, but I am not 100% sure.

Any feedback on the above? I know the first and second are more MSP or IT questions.

Did encryption exist back in 1980?

I can't imagine Sage has any visibility over how SQL stores the data.  As long as the read-write operations happen with acceptable performance, and they have a proper, fully capable SQL DBA to deal with the SQL specifics they want to implement, it would "probably" be OK.  My first concerns would be performance, and second concerns being backup / recovery.

Encrypting the MAS90 folder... I wouldn't go there, but it might work.

My answer to the client would be: ask Sage.  If you run a configuration that is not specifically listed on the Supported Platform Matrix, Sage may refuse to assist with any support / technical issues.

I'll second @Kevin Moyes that if Sage can read/write, it should be fine.

Back in our MSP days, we would use BitLocker to encrypt the physical servers and didn't have any issues running Sage Standard or Premium. There is a performance hit, but the encryption was "underneath" the files/application so Sage wasn't even aware of it.

If they're talking about SQL Server's various encryption methods, I've never personally used them with Sage, but wouldn't expect any issues and should be straightforward to just try it.
