  • 1.  2025: Feedback on StarShip Cloud / V-Technologies Urge for Move to Cloud

    Posted 02-03-2025 10:45

A customer just received an email from V-Technologies regarding StarShip. They're pushing their StarShip Cloud solution, citing issues with outdated on-premise setups and infrastructure. According to the email, come January 1, 2025, on-premise pricing is slated to jump by an average of 30%, and they're changing their policy on lapsed renewals (you'll be hit with back maintenance fees at the current rate). Stop me if you've seen this movie before ...

To sweeten the deal for cloud migration, they're offering incentives: 50% off the first year and 25% off the second year of the SaaS subscription, no price hikes for two years, and no back maintenance fees if you commit and pay onboarding before your renewal date (My customer renews 5/21/2025). They're also highlighting that over 1,200 users are already on the cloud platform.

I'm curious about everyone's experience with this. Specifically, I'd love to hear from both sides:

    • Those who have moved to StarShip Cloud: What has your experience been? Any unexpected hurdles or pleasant surprises? How has it impacted your customer's Sage 100 integrations? Are the performance improvements noticeable? Any regrets?
    • Those who have not moved to StarShip Cloud: What's holding you back? Are you concerned about cost, functionality, integration, or something else entirely? What are your plans for the upcoming price increase and policy changes?

This is a crucial decision for many of us and especially our customers. I feel as if the move is unavoidable however after sitting through a day-long outage for one of my customers which was apparently caused by Avalara who neither acknowledged or appeared upset about it makes me cautious with recommending changes that could impact a critical companywide process such as shipping.

I have not moved my customers due to cost and the last time I checked into switching, the shipping history does not transfer from on premise to cloud.  Maybe the history transfers now.  Also, I was told the the custom settings for freight and other mappings have to be setup again.

Thanks for the feedback, Michelle. I'm surprised there isn't more here.

RKLe Sales Team, meets with Caroline Rua once a month.  Last weeks update included notification of a 3% Increase in Cloud Pricing 2/1/2025 for those with monthly or annual renewal after that date.  V-Tech is working on feature gap between on-premise and cloud for clients looking to move so they are aware of these issues before moving.  On Premise is going up 30%, so they want to work with us on "marketing" to our On-Premise Clients.  "Most of our clients" heavily use Parcel and Freight; some with significant freight shipments; pushing them into the "Enterprise Subscription Pricing" of StarShip or in some situations they need "more" than even that level supports. For reference, here is the Web Page to Quote/Price StarShip Cloud; don't forget there is a Setup Fee to get started.  https://subscription.starship.online/products/starshipplus#pricing

All of my Starship customers currently use the on-premise version.

    1. What's holding me/them back?  It's working well as-is. Excluding the previous UPS OAuth fiasco upgrades are generally straightforward. This is the first I have learned about a 30% price increase.

    2. Are you concerned about cost, functionality, integration, or something else entirely?  Of course.  Concerned about all of these.  A 30% increase may seem like a deal if the cloud product doesn't work as intended.  In addition to the subscription cost, I am concerned about re-doing custom rules, labels, ship-via mappings, user (and consultant) training, etc.

    3. What are your plans for the upcoming price increase and policy changes? I need more information.  Interestingly, neither V-Technologies or any customers have communicated with me about this.

I have two customers on Starship Cloud.  One was brand new to Starship, got upset at the recent price increase and called them and has 2024 pricing at least for one more year.  The other was bullied into switching from ShipGear and just emailed me about switching back.  Nobody likes the support practice of start a case on the web site and hope they get back to you before its too late to get product out the door...

I can further back up the complaints here as I was on the phone Monday with a customer and Vtech (or whatever they are called now) and the customer was very vocal about the price increase and expressed how there wasn't anything to compel them to move to the subscription model as the on-premises (non-sub) version works just fine.  He even stated that if the time comes where the on-premises version of Starship just quits working that he'll consider his options then.

So.... speaking of that ... does anyone have any experience with any other shipping software that is truly integrated with Sage.  I've seen MAXShipper https://maxshipper.com/about-us.htm and FreightPlus https://frtplus.com/indexmas.html .  I've had no experience with either .. anyone use either of these solutions for a customer?

We have had the same type of discussions with them and client. Starship (V-Tech) did confirm that they would do all the setups including making sure the freight rules were migrated and integrations were working. As others have said, the starship shipping history does NOT migrate. If writing back to Sage, the tracking numbers are still in Sage so may not be as bad as we all feared. Or at least that was the argument.

In the wait and see category, they promised that the Starship Cloud will work with versions of Sage from 4.1 through 2024 and there are no plans to force a client to upgrade their Sage to a different level even as Starship cloud auto upgrades. "It will always work with Sage 100"

Our client is really is being force to upgrade to the Starship cloud and try this due to the financial increase. So will be sure to report back later how it went.

    Thank you,

    Michael

StarShip Cloud - I have a client that implemented Sage 100 Cloud (hosted by Sage) and StarShip Cloud. There have been performance issues, slow printing of shipping labels that have improved to a point that is tolerable, that continue to affect operations. My experience is that the on prem solution is much more responsive. Fortunately, if you don't know the difference nothing to complain about.

Another user pulls shipment history from the StarShip SQL tables to analyze warehouse operations in Power BI. I've opened a case to VT asking if is this is possible with StarShip Cloud.
