2020 Tax Table Update

  • 1.  2020 Tax Table Update

I have some clients using payroll in versions prior to 2018 who will not be able to upgrade by year end.  I understand that Sage will not supply a 2020 TTU.  Does anyone know what manual changes will need to be made next year?

I thought they were providing a TTU for 1st qtr 2020 for v2017.  For other versions, you would need a Circular E for the Federal Tax tables and manually adjust them like in the old 371 days.  Same for the State and Local.  All done through Tax Table Maintenance.

New employees hired starting 2020 use a new W4 which has new filing statuses only accommodated by Payroll 2.x

@Jon Parkinson I'm in the same boat with clients that cannot upgrade until spring.  Per my conversation with sage, they are going to provide a year end IRD and a Q1 2020 tax table for Sage 100 level 2017.  After that there will be no more tax tables available for level 2017.  If you have clients on levels older than 2017, you could print out the tax tables from 2017 with the updates installed and update the older levels manually.

Try installing the TTU on the unsupported PR versions.  This has worked for me in the past.

Please everyone who believes they can follow along with the way payroll used to be -- understand that there is a new W-4 coming for 2020. This will have NEW exemption/withholding codes. Sage has hosted at least one webinar on this change ( see attached for PPT slide deck )

I do NOT believe Sage is updating non-framework payroll for these new withholding statuses. The IRD will NOT update for 2020 capabilities. IRD just handles reporting requirements for 2019. This has been VERY publicly stated for the past few years. No surprises. No change in policy.

    TL;DR:

    1. You might be able to dodge the tax table update bullet in the old non-framework module payroll by entering tables manually ( see # 2 below )
    2. The first time your customer asks how to enter the new W4 withholding codes you are going to have a choice
      a. Become their financial advisor ( Danger Will Robinson- IRS penalties ahead followed by "you told me it was ok"
      b. Perform an emergency upgrade of payroll during 2020
    3. The IRD is not going to make non-framework payroll compliant with 2020 W-4 filing status rules

According to the pdf of the Sage presentation, the new W-4 changes are supported in version 2.20.0.  has Sage indicated when 2.20.0 is going to be released?  Are we supposed to do emergency payroll upgrades the last week of December so new employees have the correct withholding?

I believe Payroll 2.20 is slated for December 19 ( or pretty close to that day ).

Since Payroll 2.x can be installed independent of the main Sage 100 program there should not be the type of upgrade disruption you have with moving a payroll user from non-framework to payroll 2.x ( which requires a complete Sage upgrade ).

    At least that's the theory

My feedback to customers who use payroll is that they must be on payroll 2.2 by 1/1/2020 or they carry the burden of perhaps requiring an emergency upgrade during 2020 to support the latest W-4 changes. I do not get paid nearly enough to take on the role of their financial advisor or to advise them to limp along on payroll only to get a call in 2020 that my advice was bad and they want a free / reduced-cost upgrade.

I will advise the same.  It seems risky given the short time span to get the new version installed.  I know it shouldn't take long to upgrade from 2.18 or 2.19 to 2.2 but there is always a risk.  I have two that use vi imports to payroll that have perform logic.  I have a week to access the impact and potentially get a programmer to make changes.  No matter how many times I communicate I am not the financial advisor, the finger will be pointed at me if something goes awry.

Sage City post on the new TTU which apparently was released last week for Payroll 2.x but cannot be fully utilized until Payroll 2.2 is installed ( available Dec 19 2019 )

The Sage City link you are citing indicates the 2.20 payroll program will not be available until December 19, 2020, more than a year from now.  It seems we have more time than we previously expected to get ready.
