  • 1.  2019 standard report templates do not display fully formatted numbers if > 9,999,999.99

    FYI - one of my colleagues shared this with our team, and I'm passing it along:

    Sage apparently CHANGED the templates on Standard reports in 2019 from what they were in 2018 and prior…

    Prior versions showed fully formatted numbers (with commas) on the GL reports if the number to be shown is less than 99,999,999.99

    NOW in 2019 fully formatted numbers show only if the number to be shown is less than 9,999,999.99

     This is a huge change in my humble opinion, which exposes us to boatloads of questions, support cases and work to change, report by report, field by field, everything back to the way it was prior to 2019.

     I for one will be alerting Sage to this- as a defect- as this is a take-away from prior functionality.

     I'm sure there are those of you (including myself), who see this as trivial or a non-issue; indeed, for most customers who's numbers don't get to 8 digits (except maybe for totals), it's likely not ever likely to even come up.

     There are however many clients who DO have ending balances and totals (and maybe even single transactions) in the GL in 8 digits. For these clients, this will likely be an issue.

     Just wanted to alert you to this pending something (maybe) from Sage, as you should be prepared for the question should it arise.

    My 2cents:
    Having done a significant amount of report design over the years, this is a challenge with Crystal Reports.  Reformatting / adding more information to a report and you have to make things smaller.  Making things smaller becomes harder to read.  (Change the font to something narrower and people's heads explode).
    Minimizing white space is often preferable, but when it comes to numbers you have to allow enough room for the largest possible value, or risk the dreaded #########.
    ​The first time I noticed the formula for excluding commas in large numbers I was actually impressed at the creativity.
    If someone complains, I'd see that as an opportunity to earn consulting $'s to make the report customized to that specific customer's desired look.

    Barbara - For J/C Development on v2018, we had to follow this exact same Sage formatting rule for numeric fields on all the J/C standard reports. The reasons given were very much what Kevin said. Too many years of complaints received for using smaller fonts to accommodate larger numbers and additional fields, finding a creative way to deal with the dreaded ######## when using a data set showing large numbers (albeit #### can still show if large enough). Also, on a side note, the design requirement from several versions ago that majority of a module's reports should be successfully exportable to the "Microsoft Exc​el (97-2003)" format had the highest precedence as a formatting requirement more than any other.

    This just came up with a customer upgrading 2018 to 2019. I also consider it a bug though one that impacts few people.  Sage appears to classify it as WAD
