2018 PU8 Rollback

  • 1.  2018 PU8 Rollback

    Uugh. guys. I'm a mess :)

I have a client that wants to use Scanco MB (they are already pretty deep in Scanco products), and was told the version they are on (2018.2) is not compatible. During a discovery call Scanco did indeed say to update to 2018 PU6 - and somehow when installing I completely forgot that and installed PU8 which IS NOT and WILL NOT be compatible!!! *grumble grumble*

This was over a week ago, so a complete restore is not an option. Anybody have any suggestions, or ever done a roll back of sorts? 99% of their solution is Scanco based, but they also have Starship, APS, and Avatax. So I can reinstall all that jazz, and maaaybe remigrate backwards???

Oh, I'm so sorry Michelle. I know exactly how you feel because I went through the same issue about a year ago. Customer was on 2015 and we went directly to 2019, only to find out we can only go to 2018.6. Customer uses everything Scanco including the WorkOrder Efficiency Package which used to be an ACSG product. I think I was the first to upgrade to 2019 because even Scanco did not know that the WO Efficiency would never be updated. Only when they contacted Brandi Ford did they realize that their product is not 2019 compatible and it would always stay on 2018.6. Fortunately for my customer we found out 2 days into the new version. They went to do a Work Order completion and could not enter a Bin Location. MB was not part of the 2019 Data Dictionary. Per Brandi and Scanco there was really no other option but to restore. So that's what we ended up doing. I did a bunch of VI imports/exports and they re-keyed some transactions but after about a day we were up and running on 2018.6.

I wonder what would happen if you install PU6 on top of PU8. You might get some errors but it might be easier to deal with those than to do a complete restore. Hopefully someone has a better suggestion.

v2019.2??  Just a thought.  The other three enhancements are straight forward so you might spend less time overall by going forward out of the mud.  Unfortunately, PU 3 is never going to be compatible either...

Sadly, my experience with trying to install a lower PU is stopped by the program.  What about installing a new instance on the same server, all of the many pieces with PU6, then migrate the data over the new system by directly running Migrate.exe.  I've never tried to "downgrade" and the system may balk, since it does when an older PU install is attempted.

I wonder if this would work:
    Restore from 2018.2
    Upgrade to 2018.6 and Migrate
    Copy MAS_XXX from 2018.8 to 2018.6
I'm sure there are several files, particularly in MAS_System you might need to manually change but as long as it sees the data as 2018.6 it might work. I don't think new fields were added between 2018.6 and 2018.8 so the Data Structure and the DD should be the same....hopefully.

I believe MB is compatible with 2019.something.  Upgrading may be safer than trying to unwind a product update.

Doug, MB is but other Scanco products are not, and will never be. Specifically the ones that are meant to integrate with work order. They expect you to go to PM.

It seems WOEP & SBOM & Transfer Tracking are all compatible with 2019.2.  Can you take them forward instead?

@Nancy Hanson Glad you saw that. They must have changed their mind and updated WOEP. They told me as recently as a few months back that 208.6 would be the last update. Obviously that would be the best route forward.

Thank you all, I really appreciate your feedback. I will reach out to the customer and find out if they want to do an upgrade, as that seems to be the 'safest bet' from the group as a whole.

They are too big a corporation to risk having trouble later - and potentially botch a future upgrade because I took a shortcut :( Really wish Sage would add a Roll-Back option, especially considering all the new 'partner' releases that we don't find out are non-compatible as @Kenny Daniel mentioned (and the Sage PU's that also are often full of flaws).

Michelle,  what did you ever do on this?  I have a coworker on PU3 for 2019 and needs to go back to PU2.  Did you have any luck?

@Nancy Hanson - well, I am kind of embarrassed to say since it is a total cheat! Another 90-minder DM'd me (So I will keep their identity a secret for now), suggested going into SY_System and just changing the PU back to what I needed to get through the install, then once complete changing it back. It worked for me, but I went through the entire PU history to make sure they were not using anything that was updated (i.e. they don't use Job Cost, Work Order, processing multiple SO or PO, etc.). I made a backup and told them to test test test and be ready to restore from backup if there were any errors I couldn't identify as unrelated to the "roll back". So far so good, and we are about 20 days in. The other 90minder was 6 months in (i think). So for sure not a recommended or "supported" solution, but it worked for us. Good Luck!!

Also @Nancy Hanson I DID NOT tell Scanco what I did, that would for sure Void any kind of future support for this client I am sure!!!

Seems to be an issue with Scanco and PU3 for 2019.  They have skipped this release for almost all products.  Just a caution to everyone that if they have a client on 2019 PU3 and they are interested in a Scanco application there will most likely be a compatibility issue.  Just had an issue with a client who purchased a third party solution from them and they are on 2019.3.  Scanco suggested we roll them back to 2019.2 which Sage does not recommend.  Ended up refunding the client.

"Scanco suggested we roll them back to 2019.2"
And of course Scanco provided full detailed instructions on how to do this, with a written offer to fully support the customer during and after this process?
