1099-NEC and PU ( 2018, 2019, 2020 ) compatibility with ISVS

  • 1.  1099-NEC and PU ( 2018, 2019, 2020 ) compatibility with ISVS

    Posted 11-09-2020 16:02
Starting this year there is a new 1099-NEC which largely replaces 1099-MISC for reporting Non-Employee compensation.

The following Sage versions are supported ( essentially you have to install the latest product update ):

    • 2018.10
    • 2019.4
    • 2020.1

My question is - before we all start calling various ISVs - have you check with any of them ( and if so which ones ) about who is compatible with the above product updates?

Or am I dreaming that I won't have to call around and see which ISVs are compatible with the above product updates?

I'm mostly concerned with the common ones:

    Avalara
    Starship
    Scanforce
    Scanco
    Website Pipeline/CIMcloud
    DSD
    Altec

If you install 2020.1 there is a nice brief summary of new features in the Sage KB. Copy/paste and send to your customer. It’s a much better job than the overly verbose upgrade guide.

Also, reminder that you have to run a utility to setup the 1099-NEC.

This appears to move data out of 1099-MISC.

It also seems like you need to run this utility before starting to accumulate 1099-NEC data ( I’m guessing the utility overwrites 1099-NEC totals which would be blank when you first install 2020.1 )

I’m emailing customers that I’ll install this update for them through 12/15 as part of our support.

    After that I will charge.

I’ve seen enough customer 1099 printing to know that most customers don’t pay attention to this until ( deadline - 3 day ).

I think the 1099-NEC noted that due date this year is 1/31 ( I send the customer a link to the IRS 1099-NEC instructions ).

I haven't fully checked this out yet, but it appears the utility has to be run for each company separately.

It is the year 2020 and Sage is still essentially asking users and consultants to run terminal-like commands as opposed to creating a menu-driven option with instructions.

But at least now there is a 64-bit option coming, making the transition from 90's to 2000's program architecture.
    /sarcasm
To be fair, replacing ARWAR4 with runtime corrections was a big improvement.  They just need to keep going in that direction.  Plus, I'd rather have a command line fix available quickly vs waiting far too long for a pretty fix.

Just a note of concern:  If our tests hold true, the Utility does not change the Box 7 coding on Open Invoices that have not yet been paid.  Since you can't run the Utility twice (it overwrites the data that was already there and doesn't append to it), we think the only way to correct the Open Invoice files that are coded as Box 7, is to do an adjustment to the Open Invoice before the Invoice is paid.  Again, assuming our tests hold true, I foresee quite a few issues with the Open Invoices still being coded as Box 7 on the regular 1099 Form.

It's more than serious as I'm doing a 30 company update this weekend.  I may hold off running the utility till year end but that has repercussions too.  Rather than an adjustment, can we export the open invoices and import with the new 1099 information?

1099 amounts are cash basis and don't get written to the table until the invoice is paid.  Why are open invoices a concern?  Does the 1099 box get updated when the invoice is eventually paid?  If so then what's the issue?

I had maybe 3 customers appear to care or even realize that there was a new 1099-NEC. I'd love to run a contest to see who gets the most panic/emergency calls on 1/30 demanding a custom report and/or update to the latest PU. This happens every year with 1099s. Nobody thinks about them until two days before they are due.

I had a few calls in April and May asking for help filing Aatrix 1099s. Of course most people like file on time, and as you point out, it seems to always be urgent.  Maybe we have an emergency service fee escalation clause.

    Doug,

I'll send you the boilerplate that I used to notify my customers. I told them I would install as part of my support agreement up to 12/15. After that, there would be a charge. My experience is two or three every year call on the eve of the 1099 due date and I usually have to create an emergency report for 1099 data.

We've been doing a big push to clients to let them know about this so we don't have an emergency come January, especially as we still have some on older versions who have held off upgrading. Here is what I know about ISV's I've encountered so far.

Avalara - Compatible for 2018 and 2019, have not tried 2020 but expect it would be.
Scanco - Multibin, Manufacturing are NOT compatible with 2018.10, not yet compatible with 2019.4 (this is coming), compatible with 2020.0 (which does have the 1099 changes) but not compatible with 2020.1 yet.
DSD depends on the solution but I am finding that almost all are compatible, they are listed by solution with their compatibility

    Hope this helps a bit!

Scanco is most certainly going to be the wrench in the works. I have 2 clients I can think of off the top of my head that will not be able to install the update. For the CPA types out there, what, if any, is the penalty for not filing a 1099-NEC?

Love the workaround for 2019.2. *Face Palm*

There will not be a fix for version 2019.2. A possible workaround would be to install a second standalone version of Sage 100 upgraded to the needed Update version just to process the 1099 NEC requirement.

Buy a cheap 1099 form filler program and import the data from Sage? Maybe enough to get through this year?

POSTED TO THE SAGE URGENT GROUP posting here for reference:

I'm using this group to post a notice for the 1099-NEC Utility released by Sage.

Our own @Jeff Fiddelman discovered a flaw that has been tested and was confirmed yesterday by @Sue Bennett.

The 1099 NEC Utility does NOT update AP Open Invoice file.

Since 1099s are based on payments, invoices paid after the 1099-NEC utility are not properly recorded to the 1099 History. Re-running the utility will not fix the issue.

SAGE IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND IS WRITING A HOT-FIX FOR THIS ISSUE.

If you have installed the 1099-NEC utility from Sage you will need to install the hot-fix when it is released.

Release date is pending.  We will keep you informed.

BIG Thanks to @Jeff Fiddelman and @Sue Bennett for bringing this issue to the forefront.

In my test, once I changed the reporting year to 2020, the NEC fields showed up in vendor maintenance, but not in AP invoice data entry and ROG, which could be another problem.  I hope that's just me, but wanted to share.  My test was in version 2020.

Sage says you can suggest this as an enhancement. I noticed it in 2020.1.  The thing you have to do different is set the reporting year to 2020 from what I saw.

Unable to select 1099-NEC form in the Purchase Order module:

    • Purchase Order Entry
    • Receipt of Goods Entry
    • Receipt of Invoice Entry
    • Return of Goods Entry

This was submitted as a future product release. It was determined to delay until there was greater customer demand as it would require major resource alignment.

I find it unfortunate that Sage requires a vote for an enhancement.  It should be a hot-fix.  If the 1099-NEC is a feature in Accounts Payable then it needs to be supported in all modules where a 1099 form can be selected.

There shouldn't be a vote for ANY improvements to the software.  As Henry Ford said:  If I asked people what improvements to transportation they wanted, the answer would be "A faster horse".  Innovation provides features the user didn't know they needed.  Some features users expect to be standard.

I added a comment to my vote that the 1099-NEC on POs was a compliance issue and if users don't even get compliance updates then why should any of them pay maintenance at all.  And proper programming would make any selection list a database table so that changes like this are simple and quick.

Doesn't look like that is the case (being able to rerun) @Wayne Schulz.  For those that have already run it, looks like they will have to be manually cleaned up.  The slightly good part is that there is a text file created by the utility, so you have a list of which vendors you need to investigate.

We expect updated utilities next week that will correct issues with the existing 1099 utility and AP open invoices.  The utilities are in testing and review.

A product update will be released next year (first quarter) to address the selection of the 1099-NEC form form Purchase Order Entry.  It will cover release versions 2019, 2020, and 2021.  It will not cover the 2018 release.

Yes, AP recurring invoices are being reviewed.

** Without seeing the updates, I suspect that any PO Receipt of invoice posted with 1099-M and paid 2020, will be addressed using one of the new utilities.  The PO fix for selecting 1099-NEC affects 2021+ 1099s.
